About the Concert

Our Concert today features music of the le great German composers whose music is a major part of the western classical tradition, J.S. Bach ( 1685-1750 ) was the first great German master and the greatest composer of what is known as the Baroque period. The modern piano was invented during his lifetime. His music is harmonically complex, but full of beautiful melodies and rhythmic energy.

The 18th century is known as the Classical era. The dominant composers of this period were Haydn and Mozart. Their music is characterized by its graceful form and elegance. Beethoven bridged the Classical style and the Romantic era which dominated the 19th century. Romantic music is known for its passionate feeling and powerful emotion. The piano was the supreme instrument of the Romantic era and the great composers of this time, such as Schubert, Schumann and Brahms have left us a great treasury of music to enjoy. These composers of the German tradition remind us that music is a universal language that reaches the hearts of people of all ages and cultures. I hope that you enjoy the work of the students and the beautiful music which they are presenting

Our concert also features some of the most beautiful vocal music of the German tradition. All the composers featured today were also famous for their vocal compositions. The romantic era was an especially important period of vocal composition and the songs of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms have a timeless beauty.
